September 11 "Leaving Home" Downtown Historic Annapolis, MD
.In August 1776, in the first moments of the Revolutionary War, the First Maryland Militia set out from Annapolis for New York. Troops from both the Eastern and Western shores left behind family, friends, and property. Under the command of General William Smallwood, the regiment distinguished themselves throughout the war - but in particular in the Battle of Long Island. Their sacrifice on that day is legendary. Join today's First Maryland Regiment in Annapolis on Sept. 11 to commemorate that day in August 1776, as the First Maryland Regiment prepares to leave Annapolis.  Meet the members of the regiment and their families as they gather on Pinkney Street in Historic Annapolis to begin their journey. Further information will be available on the Historic Annapolis website.
